The Super Bowl

Super Bowl 50 kicked off at Levi’s® Stadium in Santa Clara on February 7 2016. The Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10 and at halftime Beyonce, Coldplay, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars performed in front of a Global audience of 167M. This resulted in 60M posting on Facebook and a total Twitter audience of 4.3B. This is one of the biggest events in the world.

What is the 50 Fund?

The 50 Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the legacy fund of the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee. The 50 Fund’s goal is to help close the opportunity gap that exists for Bay Area children, youth and young adults living in low income communities and has raised over $13 million for Bay Area nonprofit organizations.

Why SAP Hybris?

The Super Bowl 50 Host Committee approached SAP Hybris because they wanted to make it possible for fans to make personal donations to the 50 Fund and enable more people to participate in the giving aspect of the Super Bowl. “Our goal was to make Super Bowl 50 the most giving Super Bowl yet, so creating a way for fans to get personally involved was important to us," said Keith Bruce, CEO of the Host Committee. “In working with SAP Hybris, we found a solution that not only allowed us to run an efficient short-term program, but also enabled fans to make donations quickly and easily.”

What we accomplished with SAP Hybris as a Service?

Thanks to the component approach of SAP Hybris as a Service a small novice team was able to able to assemble a solution to collect donations inside 2 weeks. Connecting to our payment partner Stripe enabled a fully functional end-to-end donation microsite to be created. And as these components are pay-per-use business services, once Super Bowl 50 was over and the microsite no longer necessary, it was simple to disassemble and enable unsubscribing.
"Leveraging the unique qualities of SAP Hybris as a Service we were able to deliver a solution to meet the specific needs of the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee,” said Stefan Schmidt, SVP SAP Hybris as a Service. "This is a great example of how an application can be built quickly from distributed components and deliver tangible value."

How did we do it?

The Commerce Storefront Template was customized to provide the donation website UI. The donation process was run as a client side AngularJS application using multiple YaaS services. The process worked as follows. A product of the value of $1 was added to the cart service and the donation amount entered by the user reflected the quantity of this product. The flow continued through the Checkout and Order service, which finally created a confirmation message to the user via the Email service. An additional microservice that calculated the overall sum of donations every 10 seconds was implemented in order to display the total amount of donations on the website.
